CINCINNATI (AP) _ Kroger Co. (KR) on Friday reported fiscal second-quarter net income of $731 million.

On a per-share basis, the Cincinnati-based company said it had net income of $1. Earnings, adjusted for investment gains, came to 90 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 83 cents per share.

The supermarket chain posted revenue of $34.64 billion in the period, which also topped Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $34.41 billion.

Kroger expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.95 to $4.05 per share.
